General Court meets for the first time in Massachusetts.

September 2, 1630

(OS 8/23) The meeting is held at Great House in City Square. It is decided that the court shall be made up of a Court of Assistants elected annually by adult male citizens, who subsequently are required tobe church members. Louis Wright later describes the government as “[A] Puritan theocracy, a holy commonwealth . . .governed by a small ruling class – an aristocracy of the pious.”
